What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, Sanskrit for "the science of life" (ayur = life, veda = knowledge), is at least a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that originated in India. This ancient tradition is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It views human beings as an integral part of nature and provides a comprehensive approach to life that is tailored to each individual.

Foundational principles

Ayurveda is a complete system of medicine that focuses on preventing disease and maintaining health through close attention to balance in one's life.

  • The Five Elements: Ayurveda is rooted in the idea that the entire universe, including the human body, is composed of five basic elements: space (ether), air, fire, water, and earth.

  • The Three Doshas: These five elements combine within the body to form three distinct mind-body types, or biological energies, called doshas:

    • Vata (Air & Space): Governs movement, circulation, and nerve impulses.

    • Pitta (Fire & Water): Regulates metabolism, digestion, and body temperature.

    • Kapha (Earth & Water): Provides structure, lubrication, and strength.

  • Your Unique Constitution: Each person is born with a unique combination of these three doshas, known as their prakriti. While your constitution remains constant throughout life, it can go out of balance (vikriti) due to diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

  • Like Increases Like, Opposites Balance: A core tenet of Ayurveda is that "like increases like," and "opposites balance". This principle guides treatments, which introduce qualities opposite to the current imbalance to restore harmony.
